BOARDMAN (June 30, 2010) -- The Citizens Committee for the Library Levy held a fundraising event at the Culinary Arts Center, McClurg Rd., Boardman, on Wednesday, June 30, to benefit the levy campaign for the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County. The Library is looking to place a 1.8-mill operating levy on the November ballot.
The event, which raised about $6,000, featured a full Italian dinner and desserts. Highlight of the night was a series of cooking demonstrations by chefs at the Culinary Arts Center and Danny Catullo of Catullo Prime Meats. Those in attendance enjoyed demonstrations on making focaccio bread, pizza, Tuscan steak and biscotti.
The “Taste of Tuscany” evening was underwritten by Ed and Chris Muransky. Also, the committee thanks contributors Danny Catullo, Catullo Prime Meats; Tom Zidian; the Culinary Arts Center; the Friends of the Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County; Harper-Collins Publishing Co.; and Gia Russa.
A 1.8-mill levy would allow the library to restore some of the hours which were cut at libraries throughout Mahoning County and maintain quality library service in our community. This levy would cost the average homeowner ($100,000 home) about $4.59 a month.
Sharp reductions in state funding have caused hours cuts, reductions in the salaries of all library employees (including the director), and staff layoffs. If the levy fails, the outlook is bad; most likely, five or six libraries would be closed.
The library is debt free and well managed. Planning has been underway this year to provide direction for the library system in this declining economy.
